I interviewed Kapi’olani Medical Center’s Injury Prevention Specialist, Lisa Dau, about booster seats today. When to move into one, how to install the different types into your car, how to secure your child properly and when it’s time to move out of the booster.
 

 When is My Child Ready to Move on From a Booster Seat?

By law, your child needs to be at least 8-years-old. We always want to use best practices though. Most 8-year-olds do not meet the height requirement of 4’9″. We want to make sure that when our child is sitting in the vehicle without the booster that the seat belt fits properly. The shoulder belt should fit across the chest and the lap portion fits low on the hips. If the seat belt starts to come up by the neck or if the lap portion comes up by the belly, even if the child is 8-years-old, they should still be in a booster seat.
