Malika’s “Modern” Munchkin-less Staycation

I just got back from a jam-packed, exciting – yet relaxing – staycation on Oahu. We flew into Honolulu from Maui and headed straight to The Modern Honolulu for a munchkin-less weekend. Every mom deserves some time away from the kids to relax and rejuvenate! Our room was spacious and clean with a wonderful view out to the ocean – I especially liked checking the surf from my window!

We got ready for dinner in our room and headed downstairs to the restaurant “Ravish Honolulu” – it’s located where Morimoto used to be – for a bite to eat. Love that there are options for indoor or outdoor dining. It was a bit humid so we decided to sit inside where the air conditioning was. The view of the sunset and the harbor with all of the boats is so pretty. I ordered one of their specialty cocktails “Thai Me Up” – it was delicious. I had three! The bar even made me a “MOY cocktail” – Mom Of the Year – ha ha! How sweet :) The food was delicious… check out the video to see what we ordered… sooooo good! Our server, Sheldon, was amazing and took great care of us and the general manager even came over to the table to check in. Overall, 5 stars! It was a great experience. Ravish will be having a special Mother’s Day dinner too! I’ve put the information at the end of the blog for anyone that is interested. : )

Then, we headed to the Lobby Bar. It’s a pretty cool spot. During the day it looks like a library and at night the wall opens up to reveal a “secret” space hidden behind it. There’s a bar, dance floor and lots of lounge furniture for relaxing with your friends. It got pretty busy so we decided to go upstairs to Addiction. The nightclub is also right there in the hotel. One stop shop! The DJ was awesome! We danced the night away and were so relieved that all we had to do was catch an elevator up to our room to “get home” and hit the sack.

The next morning, I woke up early and walked over to Kaisers (my favorite surf spot) to jump in the water for a surf. I love the proximity of the hotel to … well, everything! I surfed for a couple of hours (without my kids! Imagine that!) and headed back to wake the girls up for our time by the pool.

We headed down to the pool deck where we had a choice of picking a daybed by the “adult only” pool – which is a shallow wading pool with plenty of “Instagramable” backdrops OR sitting on the lower deck which is by the pool bar / restaurant and the bigger “all ages” pool where kids roam free. I have to admit, it made me kind of wish I had brought the kids… next time for sure!! We ordered a frittata, avocado toast and a fruit platter – all were delicious  and oh-so-pretty too! And then… we rested. Ahhhh…. I had forgotten what that was like… to just sit… take a nap… go to the bathroom on my own… ha ha!

I wrapped up my “munchkin-less” birthday/Mother’s Day getaway with a 60 minute massage at “Lather” – the hotel’s spa. I have no words for this experience! It was divine. Even the water tasted good! I put my things in a locker and was led to my massage room by my therapist, Elena A., where I was able to choose one of four scents for the lotion she would be using on me. I chose the minty scent which is supposed to help you “focus” better – lord knows I need that! She started with a “covered” massage where the sheet was over my body and then finished with a more traditional uncovered massage. It was the best LomiLomi I’ve ever had. The spa also sells customizable lotions – like the ones they use in the massage – where you can pick and choose scents to make your own 8 oz. personal body lotion. I chose ylang ylang and yuzu :) The whole experience ended wonderfully when I was handed a glass of cool water… I took one sip and was blown away by the taste! They have different essential oils that you can choose to put in your water and this was their coconut flavor… I liked it so much, I bought that too! Been using it ever since… sweet, with a hint of coconut… I feel like I’m still on vacation!

It was a great staycation and I highly recommend The Modern Honolulu to anyone hopping over for the weekend and wanting a special weekend in town. We did a girls trip but after experiencing the Modern for the first time, I can’t wait to bring my ‘ohana back with me! Check out the specials they are running for Mother’s Day below!
