I have to admit… this one was not on my list. Sometimes, when you’re on a production you just have to go with what the producers want. Soooo, I did. Kapena falls is a dangerous area – people have died there. The water has the potential to carry leptospirosis and the cliff-jump is unsafe. I tried to get out of it. I tried hard. When I realized they weren’t going to budge, I tried to make the best of it.
My first idea was to deflect from the cliff jump aspect. I decided to invite one of my best friend’s and my hanai little sister, Miss Hawaii USA, Moani Hara. She’s beautiful, vibrant and fun so I thought she would be a great addition to this part of the segment. Plus, when we got there and I officially said “no” to the cliff jumping I needed a partner in crime! It worked beautifully. We got there and pretended to “run into her” at the falls. lol
She and I had a fun time swinging on the rope swing and swimming around while the host, Shane, climbed up to the top to do the cliff-jump.
We did the rope swing a few times (while mosquitos swarmed) and tried to stay in the water to not get bitten!
Shane did his jump just enough times to get the shot – in this case twice. He even admitted to being sore afterwards! Glad we didn’t do it! And, I would not recommend jumping off of the cliff to anyone! Better safe than sorry!
We also made sure no one had any open wounds or sores… leptospirosis is not fun (and can be deadly if left untreated). Keep your head above water and don’t get any in your mouth, ears, eyes or nose. I also did a “safety briefing” for everyone advising them to see a doctor right away if they experienced flu symptoms in the coming weeks. Lepto can take up to two weeks to manifest itself. Anyhoo… it wasn’t an ideal shoot location, shoot or situation BUT we made the most of it! Plus, I got to spend some quality time with my girl Moani Life’s Swell…
